Our Mission

Protect our Water.
Protect our Future.

Highly toxic waste buried at the Columbia Falls Aluminum Company (CFAC) Superfund site threatens our water, our health, our community, and our economy, if it is not removed. Yet the proposed “cleanup” plan, written by the company’s consultants, would leave the toxic waste-in-place and restrict future economic redevelopment and human use. Forever. That’s not a plan that is good for anyone except CFAC.

Person Outline

The Coalition for a Clean CFAC is a growing group of individuals, organizations, and business in the Flathead watershed who want to see the toxic waste removed from the CFAC Superfund site and the area restored for future use that benefits our community. We started to organize after it became clear the EPA was likely to rubber stamp CFAC’s plan to leave the site as a toxic waste dump forever.

Secure the comprehensive cleanup of the Columbia Falls Aluminum Company (CFAC) Superfund site for the health, enjoyment, and economic benefit of the local community and the protection of the Flathead watershed.

  • Get the EPA to hold off on a final cleanup decision until a fair and independent evaluation of the cost-benefits of removing the highly toxic waste is conducted.

  • Develop a community vision for the future use of the site through an inclusive public process. We are currently applying for EPA assistance grants to help launch this visioning process.
Act Now

Ask the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to pause its decision.

We must act fast to keep CFAC from becoming a permanent toxic waste dump. The EPA is currently evaluating the company’s proposed cleanup plan. A decision on how to proceed is expected in late March.

Highly toxic chemicals are buried on site, some in waste dumps, other in undesignated areas:

  • Cyanide

  • Fluoride
  • Arsenic
  • Selenium
  • Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)

Community

Leaving the toxic waste in place threatens our water, our health, our community, and our economy for generations to come.

To: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the MT Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ)— I signed this petition to respectfully request that your agencies pause the decision-making process to fully and fairly evaluate the cost-benefits of removing (not leaving) the toxic waste at the CFAC Superfund site. No cost analysis was done by CFAC when they wrote the cleanup plan. CFAC simply dismissed this option as too costly, even though they acknowledged it would likely be a permanent and effective solution. We ask the EPA and DEQ to require an independent cost analysis be done to evaluate the permanence and long-term effectiveness of off-site removal. This is necessary to ensure the cleanup truly protects our water, our health, our community, and our economy. CFAC and ARCO, and early on Anaconda Co., made many millions of dollars operating this aluminum smelter from 1955-2009 and provided good jobs. But the citizens of the Flathead watershed shouldn’t be left with their toxic mess. The site must be fully cleaned up and restored for future beneficial uses.
